Hoping BagNewsNotes Weighs In On This One …

Seriously, BagNewsNotes has been doing such a good job analyzing images of Obama and images of Obama and McCain — we could use his wisdom here.

Hey Bernie, you got me. Actually though, I thought this image was rather weak since it was collaged together out of so many different pieces. Mostly though, I think New York Mag was trying to leverage the political campaign to sell its usual summer issue.

Surely though, it shows a very potent Barack, not just according to the pecs but by virtue of the obvious height difference. I guess the fact he’s coming down on McCain on the fist bump is evidence, also, of his lead in the polls. It does seem a little curious Obama is on the right — since the layout preceded his shift to the center this past week or so. Primarily though, the contrast of the smiling faces and the fists seems to reflect how this campaign pretends to be cuddly on the surface, but — as typical — is pretty vicious just below.

Thanks, Michael, for responding to such a blatant and self-serving plea :)

Yes, it’ a very manufactured image — and a pretty cheesy one at that.

But New York Mag’s choice to use it outside of any political context seems a significant commentary on the celebrity nature of this campaign — and the way McCain doesn’t seem to be part of it.

McCain, in fact, appears already retired.
